The Tea That Feels Like a Hug in a Mug

It’s 4:30pm, pitch black outside, and someone’s just tracked half a snowbank into your kitchen. Enter: this tea. It’s not just a drink—it’s a warm, cozy escape from the chaos.

This isn’t your typical chai. No black tea. No caffeine crash. Just South African rooibos bringing the snuggly vibes, with ginger that’s got a little sass, cardamom that’s citrusy but not trying too hard, and cocoa that actually melts into your cup instead of sulking at the bottom. Add warm milk? Absolutely. Drizzle in honey? Optional, but let’s be real—you’re doing it because it’s that good.

What Makes Our Haute Cocoa Chai Special?

  • Rooibos instead of black tea: South African rooibos is naturally caffeine-free and carries a mellow, slightly sweet flavor on its own — meaning this blend doesn't need added sugar to taste balanced. Make it at 9pm without consequences.
  • Cocoa that actually blends: The soy lecithin acts as an emulsifier, keeping the cocoa powder distributed throughout the cup rather than clumping or sinking. If you're sensitive to soy, note that this product contains soy lecithin.
  • Spice with some specificity: Ginger contributes warmth and a little bite. Cardamom brings subtle citrus undertones that keep the blend from reading as pure chocolate. Natural chocolate flavor rounds out the cocoa.
  • Better with warm milk: Brewed half water, half warm milk — or any dairy alternative — this blend behaves like a latte. Oat milk works particularly well.
  • Naturally occurring antioxidant compounds: Rooibos contains aspalathin and nothofagin; cocoa contributes flavanols. Both are naturally occurring compounds in their respective ingredients.
  • Glass jar, 18 servings: Loose leaf in a recyclable glass jar. Approximately 18 cups per jar. The empties are useful — people repurpose them for spices, seeds, and the junk drawer.
  • Artisanally Crafted: Sourced from ethical suppliers, packaged here.

Grab a jar for the stretch of the year when hot drinks stop being optional.

Instructions for Brewing: Heat water to 212°F. Use 1–2 tbsp per 8oz, steep 3–5 mins, then strain. For a latte, replace half the water with warm milk. Add more leaves for stronger flavor—don’t over-steep. Store sealed, cool, and dark; best within 6 months.

All of our teas are gluten-free, although not all of our teas, botanicals, and other ingredients come from gluten-free certified suppliers.

Haute Cocoa Chai FAQs

What is cocoa chai tea?

Cocoa chai is a chai blend that adds cocoa powder and chocolate flavor to the traditional chai spice mix of ginger and cardamom. Our version uses a South African rooibos base instead of black tea, which means it contains no caffeine. The result is a spiced chocolate drink that brews like tea and works like a latte when made with warm milk.

Is Haute Cocoa Chai Tea caffeine-free?

Yes. The base is rooibos, a plant native to South Africa that contains no caffeine — not a trace amount, not a decaffeinated version of something that did. The spices and cocoa powder also contain no caffeine. You can make this at any hour without it affecting your sleep.

Does this tea contain soy?

Yes. Haute Cocoa Chai contains soy lecithin, which is used as an emulsifier to keep the cocoa powder distributed evenly through the cup rather than settling at the bottom. Soy lecithin is a known allergen. If you have a soy sensitivity or allergy, this product is not for you.

Is chocolate chai a real thing?

It is. Cocoa and chai spices — particularly ginger and cardamom — are a natural combination. The bitterness of cocoa offsets the heat of ginger; the citrus notes in cardamom keep the chocolate from reading as heavy. Chocolate chai exists across several tea producers; ours is built on a rooibos base, which adds a naturally mellow sweetness that plain black tea doesn't have.

How do I brew Haute Cocoa Chai Tea?

Heat water to 212°F (a full boil). Use 1 to 2 tablespoons of loose leaf per 8oz of water. Steep for 3 to 5 minutes, then strain. For a creamier result, replace half the water with warm milk or a dairy alternative — oat milk works particularly well. If you want stronger flavor, add more leaves rather than steeping longer; over-steeping can make rooibos slightly bitter even though it's naturally mild.

Can I make this iced?

Yes. Brew it at double strength — same amount of water, twice the leaves — steep for 4 minutes, strain, and let it cool completely before pouring over ice. Adding cold oat milk or another dairy alternative after pouring keeps the cocoa character present even when cold. It reads closer to an iced chocolate latte than traditional iced chai.

How many servings are in a jar?

Approximately 18 cups per jar, based on 1 to 1.5 tablespoons per 8oz serving. If you brew on the stronger side, you'll get closer to 14 to 15 cups. The jar is recyclable glass — people reuse the empties for spices, seeds, and kitchen storage.

Does Haute Cocoa Chai Tea contain gluten?

The tea itself is gluten-free. However, not all of our ingredients come from certified gluten-free suppliers, so we cannot make a certified gluten-free claim. If you have celiac disease or a severe gluten sensitivity, please factor that in before purchasing.

What honey pairs well with this tea?

A raw, minimally filtered honey with enough character to hold its own against ginger and cardamom works best. A lighter floral varietal like orange blossom keeps the cup delicate; a richer honey like buckwheat or a darker wildflower adds depth. Drizzle it into the finished cup after steeping rather than during — the honey doesn't need to cook, and it keeps more of its character that way.

Can I use this to make a chai latte at home?

Yes, and it's straightforward. Brew a cup at the standard ratio, then add an equal part of warm milk or dairy alternative. No espresso machine or special equipment needed. Half water, half oat milk, steeped for 4 minutes, with a small drizzle of honey — that's the version worth making.
