Walking Through Woods
You know that smell when you crush bay leaves between your fingers and the oils stick to your skin for hours? This is that—but wilder, woodsier, from the actual North American bayberry shrub that grows along the coast. Not the bay leaf in your spice cabinet. Different plant entirely.
We harvest bayberry from our farm in Kent Island, Maryland, then distill it in our Owings Mills facility. Steam rises through fresh bayberry leaves and branches, carrying the scent molecules up and out until they condense back into water. What's left is this amber-tinted mist that smells like October woods after rain—earthy, a little spicy, slightly waxy from the natural coating on bayberry leaves.
What Makes Our Bayberry Leaf Flower Water Special?
- Farm-distilled in Maryland: We harvest bayberry from our Maryland farm and steam-distill it in Owings Mills. Steam passes through fresh bayberry leaves and branches, carrying the scent molecules up into a condenser where they settle into this amber-tinted mist. Small batches, checked by hand.
- Two ingredients only: Bayberry distillate and aspen bark extract — the preservative. No fragrance added, no fillers, no water dilution.
- Hydrosol, not perfume: This is the water produced during steam distillation — gentle plant essence, not concentrated fragrance oil. The scent is present at application and fades naturally. That's how hydrosols work.
- Multiple uses: Face mist after cleansing before moisturizer. Body spray after showering. Hair refresher between washes. Room spray when you want the space to smell like forest without burning something.
- Different from bayberry candles: Candles use the waxy coating on bayberry fruit — sweeter, heavier. This is distilled from the leaves and branches: earthier, greener, less sweet.
Keep it away from direct sunlight and heat — hydrosols last longer stored cool and out of the light.
How to Use: Face: Spray after washing, before moisturizer or facial oil. Body: Mist onto skin while still slightly damp after showering. Hair: Spray into your hairbrush or directly onto dry hair when it needs refreshing. Room: A few pumps in any space you want to smell like woods. Use within six months of opening. External use only. Discontinue if irritation occurs.

Bayberry Leaf Flower Water FAQs
What does Bayberry Leaf Flower Water smell like?
Like October woods after rain. Earthy, a little spicy, slightly waxy from the natural coating on the leaves. Picture crushing a bay leaf between your fingers, except wilder and greener. This is North American bayberry (Myrica cerifera), a coastal shrub, not the bay leaf in your spice cabinet. Different plant entirely. The hydrosol carries a soft amber tint and a scent that fades within minutes, leaving skin or linen feeling clean without any perfume residue.
Is bayberry the same plant as the bay leaf in my spice cabinet?
No, and the confusion is common. Culinary bay (Laurus nobilis) is the Mediterranean tree whose leaves go into stews and soups. Bayberry (Myrica cerifera) is a North American coastal shrub, historically used to make bayberry candles from the waxy coating on its fruit. Our hydrosol is distilled from the leaves and branches, not the fruit, so it smells greener and woodsier than the sweet, heavier scent associated with traditional bayberry candles.
Can I use Bayberry Leaf Flower Water as a room or linen spray?
Yes. A few pumps in any room you want to smell like a damp forest floor without lighting a candle. It works well in entryways, home offices, and powder rooms where you want something quietly grounding. The scent is present for a few minutes after spraying, then settles. It does not stain fabric or upholstery in our experience, but as with any plant-based mist, spot test on anything you would worry about first.
Who tends to reach for Bayberry over Lavender?
People who already have a lavender product they love and want something different. People who lean toward Winter Forest candles, walks in the woods, and tea over flowers. People who find traditional florals too sweet for daytime. Bayberry skews unisex in a way lavender sometimes does not, which makes it a favorite for shared spaces and for gifting to anyone who finds most self-care scents a little too pretty.
What is a flower water (hydrosol), and how is it different from an essential oil?
A flower water, also called a hydrosol, is the water produced during steam distillation of plant material. Steam passes through fresh leaves, flowers, or branches, picks up the aromatic compounds, then condenses back into a lightly fragrant water. Essential oil is the concentrated oil that separates out during the same process. A hydrosol is gentler, water-soluble, and meant to spray directly onto skin or hair without dilution. Different product, same plant, same distillation.
How do I use a Bee Inspired flower water?
We grow it ourselves at Chesterhaven Beach Farm on Kent Island, Maryland, then truck it to our Owings Mills facility for distillation. Steam rises through the harvested plant in small batches, carries the scent compounds into a condenser, and settles back into this pale, lightly fragrant water. Every bottle is filled and checked by hand. Two ingredients only: the plant distillate and aspen bark extract, a plant-derived preservative.
How long does a flower water last, and how should I store it?
Use within six months of opening. Keep the bottle out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Hydrosols are gentle water-based products without synthetic preservatives, so warmth and light shorten their shelf life. A bathroom shelf out of the sun, a nightstand, or a desk drawer all work. If you notice any change in scent or clarity, set it aside. External use only. Discontinue if irritation occurs.
