Here is a question that sounds like it should have an easy answer: do bees pollinate figs? You are standing on a farm in late summer, the fig tree is loaded with fruit, and there are bees on nearly every flower in sight. The logic writes itself. Except it is wrong, and the real story is stranger and more interesting than the one most people carry around.

The short version: bees do not pollinate figs. And the figs we grow at Chesterhaven Beach Farm do not get pollinated at all. Both of those things are true at the same time, and untangling them is a small tour through one of the odder corners of botany.

A Fig Is Not the Fruit You Think It Is

Start with the fig itself, because almost everything confusing about fig pollination comes from a single misunderstanding: a fig is not a fruit in the usual sense. It is an inflorescence, a cluster of tiny flowers turned outside in. What looks like the skin of a fruit is actually a hollow, urn shaped pod called a syconium, and the flowers bloom on the inside, facing a small cavity you never see. There is one narrow opening at the base, called the ostiole, and it is sealed by overlapping scales.

This is the whole puzzle in one sentence. The flowers are on the inside. A honeybee working a sunflower or a sprig of lavender lands on an open face full of pollen and nectar. A fig offers no open face at all. There is nothing for a bee to land on and no obvious way in. So whatever pollinates a fig has to be small enough, and determined enough, to crawl through that sealed door, and honeybees are neither.

The Famous Fig and Wasp Partnership

The creature that can get inside is a tiny specialized wasp, and its relationship with the fig is one of the most tightly linked partnerships in nature. A female wasp, carrying pollen from the fig she was born in, forces her way through the ostiole to reach the flowers inside. The passage is so tight that she often loses her wings on the way in, which is fine, because she is not leaving. Once inside she pollinates the flowers and lays her eggs, then dies within the fig.

Her offspring hatch, mate, and the next generation of females gathers fresh pollen before chewing their way out to find a fig of their own, starting the cycle over. The fig cannot reproduce without the wasp, and the wasp has nowhere else to raise its young. Neither one works without the other.

It is a genuinely remarkable arrangement, and it is the source of the idea that wasps pollinate figs, which gets repeated almost everywhere. The part that usually gets left out is that this only applies to certain kinds of figs, in certain climates, and not to the tree in our field.

Why Our Maryland Figs Do Not Need a Wasp At All

Figs come in a few different types, and they do not all play by the same rules. The variety we grow on the farm is Brown Turkey, which belongs to the group known as common figs. Common figs have a quiet superpower: they set ripe fruit with no pollination whatsoever, through a process called parthenocarpy, where the fig develops from unfertilized flowers. No wasp required. No pollen required. The tree simply produces figs on its own.

Only the other fig types, the Smyrna and caprifig groups, actually depend on that specialized wasp to fruit. And here is the elegant part: the fig wasp cannot survive cold winters, so it is absent from most of the United States entirely. If common figs needed the wasp, you could not grow them here at all. Because they do not, a Brown Turkey can thrive well north of where any fig wasp could live, which is exactly why a fig tree can flourish on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, near the northern edge of comfortable fig country.

This also clears up an old bit of folklore about figs and hard winters. It is often said that figs bear off old wood, but for a common fig the main crop forms on new growth, the current season’s wood, with a smaller early crop called the breba forming on last year’s wood. In a cold zone a harsh winter can kill back the above ground branches, which is what thins the harvest the following summer. It is a matter of the tree taking cold damage, not of the fig missing a pollinator.

So What Are All Those Bees Doing on the Farm?

If the bees are not working the figs, what are the thousands of them out there doing? The answer is: everything else. You may occasionally spot a bee on a fig, but look closely and it is almost always visiting a fruit that has already split open, drawn to the sugars in the exposed flesh rather than doing any pollinating. None of this changes the best part of having a fig tree, which is late summer, when the branches sag with ripe fruit and you are suddenly rich in figs. A ripe fig is soft to a gentle squeeze, sweet at the stem, and best eaten within a day or two of picking.
