When did the trend of making Focaccia Art begin?

When we launched this blog, we didn't realize the fascinating history behind Focaccia Art. This innovative culinary trend offers a brilliant way to express creativity through food gained tremendous popularity during the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. As we all remember, flour and yeast became rare commodities as everyone was staying at home in isolation and baking became "a thing".

Timing for one Vineyard Baker, was perfect. Moments before the pandemic in February 2019, Teri Culletto posted her first Garden Focaccia on social when she was inspired by Vincent van Gogh's art exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and she was inspired to convey her love for nature through bread art.

She encourages experimentation in bread-making and believes there are no rules when it comes to creating art with bread. Her instructions for making her now popular "Vincent van Dough" bread advise using raw vegetables and dipping delicate herbs in lemon juice to preserve their color.

Since then, Focaccia Art has become an internet sensation, with culinary influencers embracing the trend and creating their own beautiful designs. Some bakers have even taken inspiration from art history, recreating masterpieces such as "Starry Night" by Vincent van Gogh and "The Scream" by Edvard Munch using vegetables and herbs. Focaccia is an easy bread to make and offers a blank canvas for any would-be bread artist to showcase their creativity.

Paint with your veggies and have fun. We recommend dipping the flowers and veggies first in lemon juice for preservation, and prior to baking, painting the veggies and herbs with olive oil so they don’t burn. (As you’ll see from our video, we didn’t use enough olive oil). Bake for 13 minutes or until the Focaccia is golden brown. Cut into squares or rectangles and serve.
